Lo scorso week-end siamo stati gentilmente invitati a trascorrere un week-end in compagnia in Cadagno, nella cascina di un amico. Eravamo un bel gruppetto di 9 persone. Che dire? È stato davvero divertente!
Io (Manuel) non sono tanto bravo a scrivere racconti come Milijan, quindi riassumerò a punti i miei pensieri su questo week-end:
– via tortuosa per raggiungere la meta, con turisti e mucche in mezzo alla strada – nessuna ricezione GSM, di nessuna rete (e dico nessuna!) – simpatica cascina di montagna – gita dal lago di Cadagno al lago Tom: che faticaccia… ma ne è valsa la pena! – splendidi panorami di montagna – giochi di società e tanta allegria: Ligretto! Uno! E l’oca sbronza 🙂 – stufetta elettrica per portare la camera da 12 a 18 gradi – pannelli solari – PolCant che si fa un’ora d’auto per dare le multe a 3 macchine in croce a 2000 metri – ottima cucina grazie ai 3 cuochi

Papa: a 180 all’ora preoccupate per caduta, multate 3 suore
Volevano sincerarsi delle condizioni di salute del Papa.
Quando ieri pomeriggio sono state informate del suo ricovero in ospedale, tre suore sono salite in auto per precipitarsi ad Aosta. Hanno viaggiato in autostrada, a 180 chilometri orari, tanta era la loro apprensione. Le religiose, però, non avevano fatto i conti con la stradale, che le ha fermate e multate all’altezza di Quincinetto (Torino) per l’elevata velocità.
“Patente e libretto”, è stata la domanda di rito che il poliziotto ha rivolto – non senza imbarazzo – alla religiosa con il piede pesante sull’acceleratore. “Correvate parecchio”, ha poi aggiunto. “Figliolo, ha ragione – ha risposto la suora 56enne che era alla guida – andavamo di fretta perché siamo preoccupate per la salute del Santo Padre”. Questa nobile spiegazione, però, non ha evitato loro una multa di 375 euro e la sospensione della patente per un mese alla spericolata sorella. Che per completare il viaggio, e raggiungere l’ospedale di Aosta dove ieri Benedetto XVI è stato operato, ha dovuto lasciare il volante alla consorella di 65 anni (l’altra passeggera, anche lei suora, ne aveva 78).
So it’s that time of the year again – summer vacation, here we come! This year me and my bf decided to visit Montreal. And for the first time, we made the big step and upgraded ourselves to Business for the return flight. As it turned out, it was definitely worth it.
The entire trip consists of 4 legs, which I’ll try to describe as accurately as possible for all you fellow A.netters…

Lugano-Zurich, Switzerland
Flight: LX 2905 (LUG-ZRH) Airplane: Saab 2000 Operated by: Darwin Airline Class: Y Seat: 12F ETD: 10:35 ETA: 11:25
We didn’t even have to get up too early. Lugano is a nice little airport in southern Switzerland, and you can literally check-in until 30 minutes before departure. We did web-checkin, so we were able to show up at the airport at 10:00.

Boarding began on time, about 15 minutes before departure, and we took off right at the scheduled time. The estimated flight time was 35 minutes, but it turned out we had to hold about 10 minutes overhead Zurich because of the usual congestion there is at that time. At the end, we still landed on time.
As usual, this was a short, uneventful but still very nice flight with Darwin Airline’s Saab 2000 – actually my favorite airliner. Service consisted of 1 bottle of water and some Swiss chocolate.

We now had 1:25 hours to get to our next flight – plenty time in Zurich. We even had time to get something to eat.
Zurich-Montreal

After lunch, we took the SkyMetro to go to gates E.

When on board, I had a very nice surprise: I was one of the 2 people in the Economy section to have a lucky seat where I could actually stretch my legs to one side, because there were only 3 seats in front of our row of 4!
Take-off was 10 minutes after the scheduled time. The flight was really quiet, no turbulence to speak of. The service was great, I would say above average for Economy. Smiling FAs, very efficient and quick.
We received a snack shortly after take-off (some pretzels and drinks – yes, the entire can, without asking!), then later some lunch. There were 2 choices, of which you can see the pictures below:
Both were actually quite good. Yes, airline meals can get better with time 🙂
Landing was right on time. There was a 10 minute wait at immigration, and our bags were already there after that. The terminal we arrived at in YUL was a little shabby IMHO. Right outside, we took the tickets for the Aérobus taking us to our hotel.

We took this as a very relaxing and easy vacation, really just doing some sightseeing around the city, and driving to Quebec City for 1 day. Montreal is a nice place, and I’d recommend it to everyone.
Montreal-Zurich

Fast forward 9 days, it was already time to leave again, vacation was over. Too bad… but a nice flight in Business class was waiting for us 🙂 which cheered us up a bit.
We took the same Aérobus to get to the airport. Being used to North American standards, we showed up at the airport around 14:15 – 2:30 hours early. It turns out this was *way* too early, especially because we were flying in Business. There was no queue whatsoever, and even security looked empty. Check-in and security took about 10 minutes total, and we were there at 14:30 ready to board. Our airplane wasn’t even there yet. Hah!
Luckily we had the right to access the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, which we obviously did. Free drinks always sounds good 😉
I also took the time to play with my MacBook and iPhone 3GS: tethering actually works, and is quite fast, too!
At 15:00, right on time, our airplane from ZRH landed.
Around 16:15 we went to the gate. Boarding started just when we arrived, we bypassed the queue (OK, I admit it, I really enjoyed that part, especially because I never did it before) and boarded immediately. We had all the time in the world to make ourselves comfortable in our seats.
Now that’s what I call legroom!

Take off was about 10 minutes late, but no problem, we had already received our welcome drink. Champagne, please…
And that’s the part I prefer:
After take-off, service started with an apéro. The same pretzels we had during the onward flight, but with some white wine and a nice white tablecloth on the table.
Later, we were given the menu, where we had a choice among 4 meals. I picked “Seared beef tenderloin in red wine sauce with potato and portobello mushroom purée, carrots and green beans”. Delicious and with a very nice presentation!
Lights were turned off at 01:00 (Swiss time) and turned on again for breakfast at 04:30. Those who can sleep on airplanes could have slept for 3:30 hours straight. For some reason I’m unable to do so – probably I need a totally quiet environment to sleep – but I was still able to relax nicely while listening to some music.
Yes, the A330-200 still has the old Business class cabin, and therefore no lie-flat seats. But still, for us this was a huge difference and we found them really comfortable.
Then, breakfast was served – we were asked to fill out a form right after take-off with our breakfast preference, and I received what I wished. Unfortunately it was too dark to take a decent pic of the breakfast, but it was once again very nicely presented and very good.

Landing was 15 minutes early, at 06:00. We got off the plane, took the SkyMetro and headed for the Business lounge at gates A. We had to wait for 3 hours until we could board our flight to Lugano.
We relaxed a little bit on the massaging chairs – it actually gets annoying after a couple of minutes, so I just turned it off and stayed there relaxing a bit and enjoying (…) jet lag. I hate travelling weast-to-east, and it really screws up my day. Luckily melatonine works wonders, and I only feel like not having slept an entire night (which is true) after having taken it.
Zurich-Lugano

3 hours later, we finally headed to our gate for the flight to Lugano. Boarding started just as we arrived.

We took off 10 minutes late, but the flight was supposed to take only 30 minutes. Really short, nice. We chatted a bit with the FA, as she was 2 meters from us on her jumpseat.

After 15 minutes, the captain announced we were starting our descent. Yes, these flights are really short.
I noticed that our descent wasn’t really taking place as fast as it should. I fly on this route quite often, and we were still at about 15000 ft while only about 10 nm from the point where the approach starts – and the airplane is normally at 6000 ft there. I was right: the captain came on the PA to announce that an airplane had blown a tire on the runway in Lugano, and that we had to hold at PINIK until the runway was cleared.
After 10 minutes of holding, I dared, and I nicely asked the FA: “as we’re holding and the pilots are probably not too busy, is there a chance to visit the flight deck?”. She said that she doubted, but that she would still ask. And guess what – it was granted! 🙂 Sorry, no pictures of that part. The captain was very nice and explained me some things about the Saab 2000, while the F/O checked the airplane flying the holding pattern over and over by itself. Both very nice guys, thanks again for this opportunity!
At a certain point the captain sent me back to my seat and said we were going to divert to Milan MXP because the runway was still closed and we had used up all our holding fuel. Not what I wanted to hear, but oh well. The plan was to land in MXP, refuel, then take-off again to LUG as soon as the runway would open again.
So, after holding for 45 minutes, we started our approach into MXP
After a while, the engines spooled up again, and the captain announced that LUG was now open again, therefore we wouldn’t have to divert to MXP. Good news!

Sorry, no videos of this flight, as we chatted with the FA all the time. She was really nice. Apparently there was a passenger who wanted to sue the pilot who blew the tire, and now we were 45 minutes late because of that. WTF?! He should be glad that our pilot decided to abort the approach into MXP, otherwise it would have gotten much, much later.
After a nice landing and 2 minutes waiting for our bags, we were on our way home.
All in all, these were 4 great flights, with great flight attendants and even a cockpit visit. What could I whish more than that?

Dopo la fantastica cena di ieri presso Joe Beef (ristorante country con ottima carne e una vasta selezione di vini), luogo consigliato dall'albergo, altrimenti introvabile per i turisti "fai da te", è proprio giunta l'ora di partire… Siamo nella hall in attesa del bus che ci porterà in aeroporto e poi… via verso casa.
Nonostante ci si trova in vacanza, lunedì mattina la sveglia è suonata alle 07:00. Tradizionale colazione in albergo e poi via in direzion dell’autonoleggio dove ci aspettava una ancora sconosciuta vettura americana. Grande gioia di Milijan fu quando si scoprì che la vettura altro non era che una Dodge Charger 2.7 V6 da lui tanto bramata.
Su consiglio di un cameriere dell’albergo abbiamo percorso parte del tragitto per andare a Québec sul Chemin du Roy (route 138), caratteristica strada turistica che attraversa campagne e villaggi ben conservati della regione che ci ospita. Le case erano tutte molto ben tenute e pittoresche, e la scoperta che abbiamo fatto è che l’hobby di ogni canadese è tagliare il prato davanti a casa.
Dopo 4:30 ore di strada siamo arrivati a Québec City: la prima cosa che abbiamo fatto è stata quella di conoscere la cittadina dall’alto tramite la visita all’osservatorio della città. L’impressione è stata molto positiva e ci siamo subito resi conto che dovevamo trovare un modo per visitarla senza perdere troppo tempo. Ci siamo quindi calati nel ruolo di vero turista (ancora più vero di quello che prende i sightseeing bus) e ci siamo convinti del fatto che fare gli innamoratini sul calesse potesse essere una buona idea. Il nostro cocchiere, che ci ha subito soprannominati “les beaux suisses”, ci ha illustrato, in stretto dialetto québecois, diversi aneddoti sulla città e su alcuni luoghi caratteristici. Abbiamo così potuto apprezzare al meglio questa cittadina storica, ben conservata e pittoresca.
Dopo essere scesi dal calesse ci siamo diretti nella parte bassa della città, altrettanto affascinante come quanto visto nel borgo cintato. Se non fosse che manca il mare (e l’acqua che c’è probabilmente non supera i 4 gradi), Québec potrebbe essere una meta per delle vacanze un po’ più lunghe.
All’inizio della sera, quando il vento lasciava presagire l’arrivo di qualche temporale, siamo risaliti sulla nostra automobile per rientrare lungo una dritta (ma veramente drittissima!) autostrada, per raggiungere nuovamente Montreal in poco meno di 3 ore.
Oggi, invece, abbiamo iniziato ad accommiatarci dalla bella città che ci ha accolto, semplicemente camminando senza grandi mete lungo le vie principali del centro.
Grazie alla gentilezza e alla disponibilità del servizio concierge dell’albergo, questa sera ci recheremo in uno steak house che parrebbe essere una bomba. Probabilmente sarà il modo migliore per terminare una vacanza rilassante e spensierata.
E non poteva mancare l’aggiornamento della gallery…
Ci siamo lasciati venerdì sera che stavamo per andare al ristorante: beh, é stata una bella abbuffata. Lo Steakhouse du Vieux-Port merita di essere visitato 😛
Ieri- sabato 4 luglio – la giornata è stata un po’ sottotono… La meteo al mattino sembrava aver preso la direzione del sole, ma purtroppo un forte vento fresco soffiava sulla città. La temperatura non era certamente estiva, quindi abbiamo optato per andare velocemente a visitare un ennesimo museo che avevamo inserito nell’elenco delle attrazioni da visitare: il museo McCord, che presenta in maniera sintetica ed interessante la storia di Montréal e dei suoi dintorni. Un grande insegnamento di questa esposizione è “evitare di visitare la città in inverno (5 mesi all’anno!!), visto che il termometro può scendere anche a – 30° (record: – 33,8°). Una volta usciti, le nuvole che avevamo lasciato all’entrata erano diventate pioggerellina, perciò, visto anche l’orario, abbiamo optato per il “rinchiuderci” all’Hard Rock Café cittadino: abbiamo fatto un po’ di shopping, visto che ad ottobre il locale chiuderà e i vari oggettini non verranno più confezionati. Il resto del pomeriggio è stato all’insegna di un’escursione al porto, sotto un tempo autunnale, tipico del nostro mese di ottobre: brrrr… Fortunatamente dopo l’orario di cena (in un ristorante italiano) il tempo é un po’ migliorato (ma non il freddo) e siamo potuti andare al Village a passeggiare un po’ e a sentire i botti del festival dei fuochi d’artificio.
Oggi é stata decisamente una giornata estiva e, come molti “montréalesi”, siamo andati sull’Île Sainte-Hélène, dove si gode di uno stupendo panorama sulla skyline cittadina (vedasi la foto di questa mattina), dove si può salire sulla torre Lévis (vedasi vista nel video allegato), dove si può andare a fare il bagno, dove c’è la Biosfera (padiglione degli Stati Uniti costruito per l’Expo del 1967) e dove c’era il “piknic electronik”, una specie di discoteca all’aperto, con musica elettronica, tanta gente che prendeva il sole, buvette ben fornita, bella gente e qualche “orso” di troppo. Rientro in città con la barca spola (che va anche a Longueil) e poi pausa in albergo, prima di uscire a cenare qui vicino: non dobbiamo far troppo tardi, domani ci svegliamo presto per andare a Québec City… ci lasceremo sorprendere dal funzionamento degli autonoleggi locali.
Ovviamente anche l’estate ha i suoi risvolti negativi: chiedete al coppino di Manuel… 😉

Update: la serata al Village di ieri è stata un pochino deludente, si voglia per via della meteo (temporale in agguato), si voglia a causa dell’orario forse troppo presto per incontrare la gente “giusta”. Non è comunque da escludere che prima o poi ci torneremo, per testare un quartiere che in ogni recensione è sempre ben descritto.
Oggi invece abbiamo praticamente quasi solo camminato. Abbiamo percorso le vie del moderno Centre Ville, abbiamo camminato accanto alla sfilata multietnica collegata alla festa nazionale, siamo andati a visitare il campus universitario e l’ospedale annesso. Dopo tutto questo camminare abbiamo fatto una breve pausa in albergo, poi abbiamo ricominciato il tour tornando al Vieux Port dove erano in corso i festeggiamenti del 1. luglio. Un’ulteriore passeggiatina l’abbiamo fatta dando delle occhiate ad alcune gallerie d’arte: talune meritavano, altre decisamente meno.
Ora siamo appena rincasati dalla zona dopo aver bevuto in un lounge nei pressi del porto, cercando di riprenderci dalla deludente cena in piazza Jacques Cartier: visto che il ristorante non è degno di nota non lo menzioneremo neppure. Purtroppo si tratta di un locale che vive grazie al turismo, che piaccia alla gente oppure meno.
